Zakat Question: Zakat to Ahl Albayt

Salaam alaikum wa rahmat Allah wa barakatuh,

A man has been giving zakat for the last 5 or so years to poor members of his extended household that are part of ahl albayt / ashraaf / family of the prophet (salla Allah alih wa sallam) knowing they were from ahl albayt but not knowing that it is not permissible to give zakat to ahl albayt.

He has now become aware it is not permissible to give zakat to the ahl al bayt. Does he now have to re-pay his zakat for the last five years? Assuming of course this individual follows the opinion that zakat can indeed not be given to ahl albayt.

Thank you for your time.

Assalaamu alaykum,

The Ashraaf & Ahlul Bayt should be honoured with Nafaqah and Sadaqah.

The person does need to repay his Zakat for previous years.

Allah knows best

I’m sorry muftis, I’m not a specialist, but I just want to bring your attention to the issue of those people, are they really Ahl Albyt? I mean, a lot of tribes say they are ashraf but not everyone is righteous and truthful about that, some of them do not even have evidence.

Usually, the Ahlul Bayt have their family and lineage trees. Further, a Muslim’s word is usually taken so long at is not illogical and against all possibilities.

If someone claims, that is between them and Allah. In terms of Zakat, if they claim to be, it just means they will not be entitled to receive Zakat.

If they are about to get financial support through Zakat and still claim to be Ahlul Bayt, that’s definitely convincing because they are sacrificing a monetary benefit to abide to their view of themselves.
