I had spinal cord injury during surgery in UK. I filed personal injury claim , which was settled . Do I need to pay Zakat on compensation /Injury claims/ amount for future treatments and care ? Is this like other savings or health?
I tried to find out online but there were different opinion.
One Source (online ) provided following information about it:
There are several Islamic scholars who have written about the exemption of personal injury settlement funds from zakat if they are intended to cover medical treatment expenses or compensate for damages related to the injury. Some of these scholars include:
Dr. Yusuf Al-Qaradawi - an Egyptian Islamic scholar and theologian who has written extensively on Islamic finance and economics.
Dr. Muhammad al-Jibaly - a Saudi Arabian Islamic scholar and author of several books on Islamic jurisprudence and Islamic finance.
Dr. Hatem Al-Haj - a US-based Islamic scholar and author who has written on various topics related to Islamic law, including zakat and Islamic finance.
Sheikh Joe Bradford - a US-based Islamic scholar and author who has written on various topics related to Islamic finance, including zakat and charitable giving.
It is important to note that while these scholars have argued for the exemption of personal injury settlement funds from zakat in certain circumstances, there may be other scholars who hold different views on this matter. It is always recommended to seek guidance from a knowledgeable Islamic scholar or advisor to determine the specific zakat requirements for your situation.
