Salaam
I have been jobless for a while and now I’m working remotely from Pakistan as a Bookkeeper for an accounting firm based in the US. The issue is my firm also has few clients that do Slot Gaming/Gambling and I have to record data from slot Machines to Accounting System for Proper bookkeeping twice a month.apart from that major Job Responsibilities is to the documentation of Expenses (utility bills, Supplies, Food, Drinks, etc) and recording in the Accounting System then Reconciliation of bank Statements and Preparing Reports
Here is my Job Description Look like:
Maintaining financial reports, records, and general ledger accounts.
Preparing journal entries, analyses, and account reconciliations and assisting with monthly close processes.
Maintaining documentation for accounts payable, purchasing using Hubdoc
Performing monthly balance sheet reconciliations.
Meeting processing and reporting deadlines.
Responding to information requests, reviewing financial statements
Assisting the accounting manager as needed.
When I was hired I was unaware of the firm’s client and they only tested my accounting knowledge and skill and I did not inquire about their clients.
I need to know whether my job is halal in the eyes of Shariah or not?
also has few clients
just highlighting this part.
until one of the Mufti’s respond. I can only chip in 2p (or 2 paisa).
I need to know whether my job is halal in the eyes of Shariah or not?
IMHO It is halal. Reasoning:
The nature of the company you are working for is Halal.
The nature of your job is halal.
It just happens that the company owners are ok at accepting clients in non-halal sectors.
Recommendation, if there are other book-keepers in company, after establishing relationship strength and being comfortable with employer you can try requesting your manager to request to steer the non-halal tasks towards someone else.
Salam,
Would leave mufti sb to provide guidance on religious aspects.
From a practical perspective, I would second brother Zubair’s recommendation, I worked for Ernst and Young London and was very clear (politely) about not working on any non-shariah clients and also not hosting “social” gatherings where Alcohol was served. They were very supportive of religious beliefs. As these firms have numerous clients, hopefully, they can support inshallah.
All the best
Thank you for your reply.
Social gathering is not applicable in my setting as I’m working remotely from Pakistan. My concern is that firm is going to have more clients in this industry So I need to know before Wether I should go-ahead with the firm.
Here I’m adding more detail for Mufti SHB
Mostly These are types of Restaurants with these Gaming Machines which are very common in the West. My job is more Concerned with recording what has already happened without my involvement
(Bookkeeping). I get data about Expenses(Food cost, utility bills, business-related Expenses. Payroll, and Data from Slot Machines and I just have to record in the accounting System
Thank you I have noted your Remarks
