Unknowingly Invested in Haram Coin 3 Years Ago

Assalamu alaykum,

Shaikh, a friend told me to buy some coins a few years ago in the latter part of 2017.

I bought several thousand of these coins, and then left them to the side. Infact I left pretty much all of my crypto assets alone until a few weeks ago.

I wasn’t aware the coins were linked to riba/interest, although no staking or transactions were made by me to earn the interest/riba.

The coins are now worth upwards of $10k, and I wanted to know what I should do? It’s a pretty life changing amount of money for me, but I need to do what’s correct of course.

Do I give some of it to charity to clean it, or give it all away?

I can’t remember how much I paid initially for the coins.

Please let me know.

Wa alaykum salaam,

You would only have entitlement to the initial capital investment. Any profit must be given in charity.

Jazakallah Mufti. Do I give it away as sadaqah? Do I need to mention anything to the charity?

Maybe it can be called ‘Donation’ or ‘Gift’ but give it away without hoping any reward (sowab). Allah knows the best.
