Tenant - late rental charge

Assalamu alaikum,

I’m looking to rent a property to reside in with my family. However, the tenancy agreements out there tend to stipulate that the tenant must pay an additional charge in the event that they don’t pay their rent on time.

Would it be permissible for me as a tenant to enter this contract? It’s difficult as this seems to be a common issue among the various estate agents etc. I don’t expect to pay any late payments of rent.

Late payment penalty is usually not permissible in itself, however it is a common practise for landlords to include this sort of clause in a contract. It can’t easily be avoided. Just make sure you don’t get late in your rental payments inshAllah.
