Should I purify the Haram elements (like, interest, a small portion of alcohol selling, etc.) as saqadah or zakat?

The haram money given away to charity cannot count as sadaqah or zakat.
There is no reward for donating haram money since the money is not meant to be with you in the first place.

Assalamu Alaikum,
Is it true that this money can only be donated to a poor Muslim, and not any charitable cause? If yes, would it be okay to donate this to any category of zakat recipient (e.g. donating to a zakat fund of a charity, but intending purification not zakat)? Or is it okay for the haram money to be donated to a masjid or Islamic project?
