Is accidental death cover halal? What if it is offered free of charge (by another company) as part of Trade Union membership but one would have to opt in and then renew free of charge every year?

It is offered as part of my membership of a Trade Union. I pay a fee to the Trade Union based on my salary and I am a member mainly to have my work rights protected in case of dispute with my employer.
The cover is offered by another company through the Trade Union, free of charge but I would have to opt in and then renew (also free of change) every year.

The insurance cover is an added benefit offered to the members of the trade union. It is permissible for you to opt in, as the cover itself is free of charge to you.

The Trade Union form / agreement itself does not mention this benefit and so I am not signing up or opting in at that stage.
