Job Question: Working for an asset management company

Assalamu alaykum,

is it permissible to work as a risk manager in a conventional asset management company? Maybe I am wrong but my understanding is that it may not be haram if one is not directly involved in transactions/deals. My role is risk modelling, which involves also modelling interest based instruments for risk calculations and regulatory reporting. But I do not directly participate in trades/portfolio management. The asset management company generates revenues from fees based on assets under management.

JazakAllah Khairan.

Wa Alaykum Salaam,

Can you kindly share the job description with us?

Assalaamu alaykum,

In terms of risk calculations for new complex financial instruments, how often would that be?

And what is your long-term plans in terms of career?

Assalamu alaykum,

would the following alternatives make any difference from shariah perspective?

  1. Risk specialist in a technology company which produces risk management software for banks and asset managers.
  2. Risk specialist at an exchange which creates a market for derivative instruments.

JazakAllah Khairan.
